Which Comcast business gateway w/voice & wifi supports VPN passthru
Hi,
I am in need to setup VPN for my business and have not been successful at PPTP passthrough in the cable modem. Have called Aries for possible comcast compatible model numbers with PTPP, wifk and voice. i was told that they have models, but non support both PTPP and voice together.
Does anyone have more information to share on this? perhaps there is another mfgr that has model I need?
Thanks

HI crwheelr and welcome to the business forums.
I appreciate you reaching out on setting up a VPN within your network. The only leased modem that offers internet connectivity and voice services in one would be the Technicolor CGA4131COM which is offered for our 500 speeds and above. Are you looking to use your own purchased modem?

Your VPN and tunneling protocols are resources that we can't dive into because we are not in a position to help with your personal network. In an effort to communicate a resolution it may be a good idea to set up 2 separate modems. I recommend having one modem for phone and one for internet only. If you have a modem dedicated for internet only you can then set up your own device to administer your VPN while using a static IP and bypassing the modem. If you can send a private message I can make sure you are currently using a static IP and confirm that your modem is online and working ideally.

Hi Phil,
I asked the local Comcast sales rep about purchasing my own cable modem right after the install few years ago and was told that this would not be supported, that in fact, Comcast must be the provided of the hardware. maybe I can get around this I dont know. Do you know of a make/model that i might suggest to Comcast that I purchase that will support PTPP/voice/wifi for the lower bandwidth need of my application?
much appreciated

Hi Charles! With the additional services on the account, you would need to rent (if it were internet only, there is the option to own: Use Your Own Modem ) but I was crosschecking to see what the best option for you would be here and I ran across this forum thread: VPN connection using PPTP and the person seems to have had luck with the Arris TG1682G.

Hi Phil,
That model is a no go since it does not support VOIP which is an essential part of my service.
won't bother you much more with this, but perhaps if you know the following. This information could assist many other customers facing same issue.
PTPP is a no go due to gateway not availible to me.
There are other protocols that are supported by windows 10.
Tunneling protocols
Internet Key Exchange version 2 (IKEv2)
Configure the IPsec/IKE tunnel cryptographic properties using the Cryptography Suite setting in the VPNv2 Configuration Service Provider (CSP).
L2TP
L2TP with pre-shared key (PSK) authentication can be configured using the L2tpPsk setting in the VPNv2 CSP.
PPTP
SSTP
Would i have similar Comcast gatwway restrictions with any of these? Perhaps i can select one of these protocols to utilize instead of PTPP.
thanks
Charles

You could use a customer owned device or if you wanted to use one of ours, you could flip it into bridge or pass-through mode (depending on if you have a static IP or not) and this forum thread gives a really good explanation and walk through: 'True Bridge Mode’ vs. 'Pass-Through Mode' . You could then use a router but it sounds like you have another VOIP provider, is that correct? If so, then you'd want to reach out to them and see what their requirements are and how best to proceed.

Hi Phil,
Pass through mode, i take it that the gateway doesn't do any firewalling and leaves that task to the downstream router that I would install. I am using Comcast VOIP service however. Does passthrough work along with VOIP? probably not right?
back to earlier question though, thesse other windows 10 supported VPN protocols i mentioned earlier, would any of these be supported by the Comcast low end gateways?
Thanks,
Charles
