Please recommend a modem with DHCP reservations

The school currently uses an SMCD3G-CCR which has performed well for years. Some new building control equipment needs a DHCP reservation because it can't be configured with a static IP address. When I spoke to the Comcast tech rep today, he said I needed static IP addressing. Since I want a local not global address, this made no sense. I told him I would ask in the Forum and he seemed to think that is a good idea.

First, was he incorrect?

Second, please recommend a replacement for the SMCD3G-CCR which will allow DHCP reservations.

I tried calling again and got a helpful tech who scheduled a truck roll to replace the modem with a newer model. All is golden now. DHCP reservations are supported and, as a bonus, IPv6 is now available.

Hello xz4gb8,

I apologize for any confusion this has caused you. From what you have explained I do not think that you require a static IP. What the rep was referring to is a public IP address for you to access your network device(s) from outside your network. The DHCP reservation sound as though you need to have DHCP enabled on the equipment but a block of those addresses need to be programmed to NOT assign to other devices. (i.e. 192.168.1.10 - 192.168.1.20 being assigned to this device) You also have the option of setting up DHCP to assign addresses after the needed block. (i.e. DHCP 192.168.1.21 - 192.168.1.255)

Unfortunately due to the many different devices and their configurations, this is something that your IT vendor would be responsible for programing. This may explain why the service rep offered the static IP address. I am limited in how much support I can provide I can do my best to help. Please message me for more detailed assistance.

Just shy of three years since the gateway swap and IPv6 and NATted IPv4 are still working fine. The DHCP reservation for the HVAC controll system is still working, untouched by management for all this time.
