self-hosting with comcast dns

I already have a webserver that I want to use, but I'd like to move from my current dns, to comcast's dns. I tried to do it following these instructions: http://businesshelp.comcast.com/help-and-support/Email/using-own-domain-business-class-email-web-hosting/

However, I have a couple of questions:

1) If I set up DNS registration with comcast, I don't have to use comcast's hosting plan, correct? I already have the server set up on the IP it needs, just with another dns provider.

2) When I go here: https://businessclass.comcast.net/Secure/ManageServices/SetupDomainName

It says: "unable to register the domain, please contact your system administrator"

What do I need to do, in order to find out why this wont transfer?

yeah, it is already registered, which is why I'm trying to "transfer" it. I'm getting the error from the "Bring an existing Domain" button.

Hello CaptSpify and welcome,

Please see my responses to your questions below:

1) If I set up DNS registration with comcast, I don't have to use comcast's hosting plan, correct? I already have the server set up on the IP it needs, just with another dns provider.

You are provided a free starter website hosting plan for your 3 page existing domain or free website. You can move into Comcast your external Domain to allow you to use this Domains' email facilities under the Comcast umbrella, if you will. Under this condition you do not need any other webhosting plan. It is my understanding that the only reason for requiring a new webhosting plan is due to the modification of a website larger than 3 webpages or inconjunction with this webhosting information , fyi

2) When I go here: https://businessclass.comcast.net/Secure/ManageServices/SetupDomainName

It says: "unable to register the domain, please contact your system administrator"

The above error message refers to one of the following: 1.) Your entered Domain Name is already registered within Comcast, 2.) typo or syntax Domain Name that cannot be reconciled, etc.

Lastly, in your above link, Register Existing Domain specifically refers to your 3 Page free website ONLY and Bring Existing Domain specifically refers to your external Domain and they both will never meet.

Hope this helps you out.

A) some kind of message would be nice telling me what the problem is, and

B) It is neither of those problems. The domain is already registered, but not with comcast. Is someone able to provide me with the real error?

Hi CaptSpfy. The message most likely points to the fact that the domain is already registered.  You can verify the availability of a domain at various sites on the Internet . <who.is>  <mxtoolbox.com> <network-tools.com>,  are a few sites that provide a domain look up tool.  If you currently own the domain then you would check the box and follow the steps for domain verification.

Thank You
