Migration to Comcast Email & Web Servers

Hi, I'd like to migrate our company's email and website over to Comcast, but I am very nervous about minimizing downtime. I'm not an expert in this field, so I'd like to ask, what exactly does a CNAME alias do? If I create that record, is it going to immediately affect our working email, or is it simply something for verification purposes?

I'm not sure I understand why I can't simply enter the proper Comcast host IP and MX records over at my DNS provider's page rather than transfer control of DNS over to Comcast?

Since I'm trying to make this seamless, I'd also like to know, when can I setup the 7 email accounts I need to use? Can I do it immediately after I have verified domain ownership or do I have to wait until the transfer of DNS control has actually gone through?

Hello vicviper and welcome,

"what exactly does a CNAME alias do?" - You can find the anwser to this and all domain records here

"If I create that record, is it going to immediately affect our working email, or is it simply something for verification purposes?" - whenever you bring in a domain into Comcast the CNAME and any other record change will typically require up to a 24 hour propagation timeframe.

" I'm not sure I understand why I can't simply enter the proper Comcast host IP and MX records over at my DNS provider's page rather than transfer control of DNS over to Comcast? " - when bringing in your domain in Comcast it must be registered within Comcast Domain database in order for you to use this domain under the Comcast umbrella, if you will. Therefore, this prescribed process enables you to achieve this smoothly.

" Since I'm trying to make this seamless, I'd also like to know, when can I setup the 7 email accounts I need to use? Can I do it immediately after I have verified domain ownership or do I have to wait until the transfer of DNS control has actually gone through?" - The answer to this question is here.

Hope this helps you out.
