Setting up VPN for traveling Sales People

I have a DCP3941B Cisco Modem/router and need to set up a VPN for traveling sales people.  This router does not appear to create or manage VPN connections,  That leaves me with the alternative of using the DCP3941B in bridge mode with a VPN capable router behind it.  The router I have is a Netgear AC3200.

My concern is that if I do that, will I loose a pretty good firewall and replace it with a cheap home router firewall.  What is the difference between the firewall in the DCP3941B and the NetGear AC3200.  Also how do I tell if I have multiple IP addresses assigned for our service?  I understand that if I put the DCP in bridge mode, I will loose use of any IP Addresses over the minimum of 1 address.

I know just enough to be dangerous and not enough to keep out of trouble without some good guidance.  Can anyone help?

Hello rr4wjunky and welcome,

Yes, if you put the DPC in True Bridge Mode (TBM) you will loose all LAN DHCP, Static IP, Natting, etc. routing with the only exception of the DPC's WAN Address. Also, yes, the DPC does not have specific VPN capability but you can certainly use eiter a dedicated static IP with correctly opened ports (as shown below) on a VPN based router which all works fine with this capability implemented.

Lastly, it is also necessary for you to make absolutely sure all ports on whatever router you use with the VPN facility are correctly configured as follows: https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/rrasblog/2006/06/14/which-ports-to-unblock-for-vpn-traffic-to-pass-through/ .

Hope this help you out.

Unfortunately shifting priorities have prevented me from actually implementing this based on your guidelines, but it all makes sense and should work okay.  Thanks for your assistance on this question.
