Remote connection with PCAnywhere-making us crazy
Good afternoon,
When my boss had Go to my PC on his old computer at home and the old computer here at the shop. He would be able to sign on, but if he did not sign on for a few days, both computers would have to be restarted and then he could sign on.
He got a new computer at home, got Go to my PC set up, the same issue persisted. We change to PC Anywhere, the same issue. We replaced the computer in his office, and once again, if the computers are re-started, they can connect, but if he lets it sit for an hour, he can’t get back on.
We have other salesman who are not having any issue connecting from their homes to the office with the same PC Anywhere program. They all have different operating systems and are different types of computers.
I was thinking maybe it was the IP address, but that wouldn’t make sense because the salesman are not having the issue.
My boss had comcast send him a new modem at home, still so luck. I have had our computer person try to connect from his house, no luck. I must be missing something.
Can you tell me if maybe there are settings that I might be missing on the main computer (my bosses)?
This has been going on for months, I would be the star of the day if I fix the issue.
Thank you in advance for your assistance.
Liz

Generally if it's only happening to him it helps narrow down possible causes. Do both computers need to be rebooted or is that just what you do and it works? If so, try only rebooting his and if it doesn't work try only rebooting the server.

We just do it because it works, but I will try one at a time.
Thanks.

Hello Glassguy and welcome,
You need to consider the following to insure required pcAnywhere ports on both are always open :
"
The following pertains to pcAnywhere 12.5 SP4 and pcAnywhere Solution 12.6.7 incorporate the use of SSL / pcAnywhere 12.5 SP4 and pcAnywhere Agent 12.6.8096 host programs :
SSL packets are sent to the same TCP port on which the pcAnywhere host is configured to listen. All TCP communication from the remote to the host is done on that one port. TCP port 5631 is used by default for data, which is the same as previous versions of pcAnywhere. No other port must be configured for SSL communications.
There has been no change in the use of a UDP port to communicate pcAnywhere status information among instances of pcAnywhere on the same network segment. For example, the "Quick Connect" feature within the full pcAnywhere box product sends a UDP broadcast to search for listening hosts. UDP port 5632 is used by default for communication of status information.
The information above describes the ports used to establish and run a pcAnywhere session between the pcAnywhere remote and host programs. Note that depending on the type of authentication configured for use by a pcAnywhere host item (for example, Active Directory authentication), it may be necessary for the pcAnywhere host program to communicate over additional ports to complete the authentication request (for example, to an Active Directory controller).
"
So, if you are using these pcAnywhere versions, then it would be a good idea to insure that you client computer's IP address definitively has TCP 5631 and UPD 5632 ports open. If you are running OS Win 7 or 8, then you must also insure that the pcAnywhere app is not being OS App security blocked as well.
Hope this helps you out.
