HP8600 Pro is a primo product.   Please make sure your telephone number jack rj11 wire is connected to the Line In receptable and not to the Phone Ext receptable. You might also consider plugging an actual telephone wire into the Phone Ext receptacle and see if you can make and receive calls from that telephone line. If you can do both, then the telephone line is good and this means there are HP8600 configuration setting that need to be setup. This is an easy way to diagnose the root cause of your problem.
