considering that comcast is part of the ipv6 launch today, are you offering ipv6 to static ip customers? just curious

Welcome to the Business Forum and thank you for the post.  At this time the rollout dates for IPV6 for Business customers has not been announced.  We will place new information concerning business offerings in the announcements section of the Forum.  Please check back for updates.

The SMCD3G in its retail version has IPv6 support, as well as a number of other features (VPN termination, SNMP access) that are removed in the Comcast version of the firmware for this device. Will Comcast be remotely upgrading these devices to newer firmware to enable IPv6 and will any additional functionality be enabled?

rxtxlabs, welcome to the Forum.  As IPV6 functionality and support becomes available in additional markets Comcast will remotely update the SMCD3G firmware.  Currently, Comcast Product Management has not announced plans to offer VPN Termination and SNMP access as part of the product offering.  As additional products and services are announced we will post the information under the announcements thread.

Could you please forward this on to Sales and Product Management as an request to support the following:

* IPv6 for Business class service distibuting a /64 to the gateway device

* Unlock the full functionality of the SMCD3G device including, but not limited to:

** VPN Termination

** SNMP statistics gathering

** Firewall Logging (e.g. ability to send firewall logs to a syslog server)

Ready for IPV6 and tired of the tunnels...

 

Willing and able to participate on the first available business beta. I can afford to have issues without any costs to my business being encountered, so bring it on.

 

My hardware is all IPV6 ready to go!

I'm also looking forward to IPv6 support (and dropping my tunnels).  I would like to request support for multiple /64s though, as it would make configuring my firewall easier ("green" net that isn't allowed to have incoming connections, "red" net that is)

Boo! Doesn't make sense that residential customers in the same area get ipv6 but we are forced to tunneling and other such methods with high TCP overhead..

It confuses me that "rollout dates ... [have] not been announced" is considered a "solution" to this question. Clearly it is not a solution. It is simply a statement indicating that the issue is not resolved and implying that Comcast might have no plans to ever solve it.

Rcsheets.  Thank you for your post.  IPv6 is will be available to our Business customers in the near future.  We are currently testing IPv6 functionality on the Business gateway alongside the applicable service offerings.  Please check back for IPv6 updates in the coming weeks.

Like others have stated in this thread, tired of the tunnels and the 3 digit latency that comes with it. If there is a 'beta' program for IPv6 on Comcast Business Class, count me in. I think we're all eager to go from our CPE terminated /28 to a routed UE terminated /48 or similar.

Where are we supposed to check for updates at? And howcome is it that the residential cusomters are getting Ipv6 in my same area and yet we cannot we ipv6 and pay substantially more premium!

It's been two months since IPv6 was slated to be available "in the near future" and we were advised to check back "in the coming weeks". Has there been any progress?

As of March 29, 2013, Comcast Business pushed out a firmware upgrade in Oakland, CA that allows for IPv6 on my cable modem.  However, Comcast Business has not yet assigned it an IPV6 address or enabled the functionality.  When will this happen?

I've been getting the run around for at least a year to 18 months now when calling in to inquire about static v6 space.  They just keep telling me to call back in a few months.  I've been very nice to the people on the phone until today.  The reason I'm not so nice and friendly on the phone any more is due to the responses to the last 2 inquiries I made...

 

About a month ago via "tech" support:

"Ohhh, you mean those new IP addresses that have letters AND numbers"

 

When I explained to the so called "tech" that the letters were only A through F and there was actually base 16 math going on,  it became apparrent he was thinking of domain names and not actual IP addresses.

 

Today I called the sales department.  After making me verify my account number (which I've always been able to verify with my address/phone number before) and several other pieces of time consuming BS the person tells me that they do not have static v6 yet.  If she already knew she couldn't make the change to the account, why bother making me verify all this account info?  The best part (and the part that pissed me off) was the response of:

 

"I can add another block of IPv4 addresses to your account instead"

 

Well how in the world is another block of v4 addresses going to help?  Is there a secret equasion that I've never heard of where adding 2 IPv4 /29's together gives you a v6?  Based on that logic wouldn't two /29's get me a IPv8 /58?

 

So anyway, HEY COMCAST, get a clue.  The Internet is evolving faster than ever (surprise, surprise).  Your high tech business class customers are going to have a need for new technology before the masses.  Also, we are a much smaller total number of subscribers.  Wouldn't it make sense to start with a beta program with this smaller group of more tecnically savvy users?  Talk about the cart before the horse - whats the point in a user having a dynamic v6 address if there aren't any businesses on the v6 net to get to?

 

Also, while I'm on a rant - speaking of technically savvy people...  A few years ago when I signed up for business class service I was absolutely amazed at how smart and talented the technical support people were.  Now granted I have a high standard for such things having worked at a cable ISP for 11 years - WTH happened?  The last time I called with an RF signal problem the tech support person told me she couldn't support my WiFi router.  It took me 10 minutes to explain to her that there are little QAM signals inside the coaxial cable quite similar to the little signals that broadcast from a WAP and they have absolutely nothing to do with each other.  I was trying to get her to get me upstream SNR reading for my modem at the CMTS.  She didn't even know what CMTS was.  After another 10 minutes of questions about my LAN when this was obviously a WAN issue I hung up on her.  Called back in and got someone who knew what he was doing, got me the upstream SNR reading within a minute or two and said "You're right, there's a noise issue".  Tech came out and got me working in short order.

 

The whole point - Comcast, you're slipping... Clean up your act!

I just got a letter from Comcast Business, mainly about doubling my static IPv4 rates, but also mentioning that  they're starting a IPv6 trial for Comcast Business!

I am replying serially to this thread, very sorry for the delayed reply.  The short answer to your question is we will be remotely upgrade the SMC D3G CCR with firmware that is IPv6 capable.  I also recently posted some updates on www.comcast6.net.  Please check out our IPv6 information portal, we will be posting more updates there over the next few weeks.

We had to ensure the firmware for our commercial devices were trial ready along with some other infrastructure aspects.  We started collecting requests for trial participation.  Thank you for your patience.  In the mean time please visit www.comcast6.net for the latest on Business Internet and IPv6.

What's the outlook for getting ipv6 reverse DNS?  I've had to disable ipv6 on my mail server because some services (notably gmail) are requiring reverse lookups.
