Buying own Modem

We are using Comcast Business Starter Internet for our office and planning to buy a modem instead of leasing it.

I'm checking Comcast's website. It's showing the following modems are compatible for our service.

  1. Arris/Motorola     Retail SB6120 SURFboard DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem
  2. Arris/Motorola     Retail SB6121 SURFboard DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem
  3. Arris/Motorola    Retail SB6121 SURFboard DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem
  4. Cisco                  DPC3008
  5. Cisco                  DPC3939B
  6. Netgear              CG3000DCR
  7. SMCNetworks   SMCD3G-CCR

Which one would be better for a small business?

When I search through forum, SB6141 seems not support Comcast Business. Then why this is listed in my search?

Thank you.

Hello arcamm,

Unfortunately in order to use a Comcast assigned static IP you must use Comcast equipment. At this time Static IP's are not available for use on customer owned equipment.

I bought a cisco for own use, as I do NOT want any modems with wireless even turned "off," and I wanted the USB and ethernet.  Multiple calls to Tier 1 customer service has refused to even look at the MAC or model number so far.  They insist "we don't support ANY cisco models."  Any advice for getting past tier 1 level?  Thanks, wiredngrounded

Has this been fixed yet? I would like to stop paying rental prices equivalent to buying a new modem every 6 months but I have static IPs.

Hi Grace.  While the Arris/Motorola SB6141 is certified for business services, as a standalone modem, it does not support static IP addressing. As a DOCIS 3 device it will accommodate the Comcast Business speed tiers.

Thank You

Can you please comment on which one is good for static ip addresses on a business tariff?

Thank you

Hi Farrow.  Both the Arris/Motorla and the Cisco devices can be used with any network configuration that only requires a bridged device or does not require a static IP address. The Motorola SB6141 is widely available in the various retail outlets.

Thank You

So which modems are approved for accounts with a static IP?

My network is currently setup with the Comcast SMC setup to bridge to our router/firewall.  The static IP is setup in the router.

Can I do this same type of setup with a different modem (my own) or can I ONLY use the Comcast provided modem?

I wish I had known that before I purchased and attempted to activate a SB611 Comcast_Jacob. Is is not well documented at all that you CANNOT use your own gear with a static. All it would take is a single sentence on the modem compatibility list. Instead, I get to pay 9$ to ship a modem back to Amazon.
