COMCAST BUSINESS IP GATEWAY OVERVIEW

 

Currently, Comcast Business customers can lease one of the following gateway modem devices for use with high-speed internet service:

 

Cisco DPC3939B or DPC3941B

Netgear CG3000DCR

SMC Networks SMCD3G

 

These devices are leased by Comcast on a monthly basis, and are fully supported, updated and maintained by Comcast. All of these devices contain a combination cable modem and router with 4 Ethernet ports for connection to your own networking equipment (“customer premises equipment” or CPE). CPE devices can consist of your own routers, switches, wireless access points, and so on. Note that Comcast does not directly provide support for CPE devices, and support provided on these forums for such devices is done so for informational purposes only.

 

All gateway devices support the provisioning of static IP addresses. This enables you to obtain a set of 1, 5, or 13 globally-accessible IP (internet protocol) addresses for use with your CPE devices. Comcast will provide you with the necessary IP information including IP address range, subnet mask, default gateway, and DNS servers. You will then configure your CPE devices with these values.

 

If you are leasing any static IPs, you MUST also lease one of these gateways from Comcast. While it is technically possible for customers to purchase retail modems and use them with Comcast Business Internet service, Comcast WILL NOT provision static IPs to any retail-purchased modems. If you are using a retail modem, it will only provide dynamic (DHCP-provided) IP addresses to your equipment.

 

All gateways have certain configuration settings available to the customer. By default, the gateways are accessible by doing the following:

 

  • In a web browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari, etc.) navigate to http://10.1.10.1
  • In the “Username” box, enter cusadmin and in the “password” box, enter highspeed

*For network security purposes, it is recommended that you change the default password.

 

All of the Comcast-provided gateway units can also function in what is called bridge mode, whereby ALL routing capabilities of the gateway are disabled, and the gateway essentially functions like a standard retail cable modem; it will provide dynamic, globally-accessible IP addresses to any connected equipment. To have a gateway placed into bridge mode, or to have its password and/or configuration settings reset, please send a private message to any of the “Comcast_” users on this forum.
