Utilizing my static IP

I haven't used my static IP yet and am unsure how to set it up. Does Comcast do it from their end, or is this something I can do on my end?

If Comcast has provisioned your leased modem/gateway unit with the right settings, then you are technically already using your static no matter how you connect to the internet through it. However, for many reasons, you will generally want your own router, in addition to the modem that Comcast provides.

 

What you'll need to do is log on to your own router's configuration pages using a web browser (for many routers, http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.1.1 will work), and you will need to configure its "WAN" interface with a static IP. At some point, you will see text boxes where you can manually type in an IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway, and optionally one/more than one DNS server. Comcast will provide you with all of this information; it will be either in some of the documents when you signed up for service, or potentially in an e-mail they sent. If you don't have it, you can send an IM to any of the red-colored "Comcast_username" users on this forum & ask, or you can call 1-800-391-3000, select internet technical support, and ask them for the IP settings.
