Static IP on ARRIS Modem with Sonicwall Router?

Hi.  I was told by a Comcast representative that I cannot configure my own modem and router setup to handle the static IP that I am paying them for.  Is this true?  I will be using an ARRIS 6190 and Sonicwall 210tz.  I am VERY familiar with the Sonicwall routers and know how to configure it....just not sure if the ARRIS modem needs configuration as well....I know I will have to call comcast with it's serial number to activate it.  I am paying for the 250 Mbit Business connection.  Advice?

So is it worth the upgrade to the ARRIS?  Will having it and my own router get better results?

Yes, that is correct. Comcast only allows static IP traffic to/from leased Comcast gateways on their network. Retail modems cannot be used.

You can't upgrade to the Arris. Comcast will only provision static IPs to rented modems. As of now, the models available are:

SMC SMCD3G

Netgear CG3000DCR

Cisco DPC3939B

Cisco DPC3941B
