Reverse lookup delegation

We have a /28 on a comcast business line. I've been told by phone support that "reverse lookup delegation is not possible". Well, it was more like "what? no we don't do that".

They then made me spell out all the reverse records I wanted on the phone, and gave me a ticket number, and did *nothing*.

I see in other tickets here that reverse delegation *can* of course be done.

Can reverse delegation please be activated on our account? I'm happy to provide our name servers.

It looks like they do eventually notice but I ended up contacting them right away anyway.  It did speed things along a bit.  They'll probably need your name, account number, and your name servers, and possibly the netblock you want delegated.

The mods are clearly employed by Comcast but it's unfortunate that they were the most helpful over self-serve options and/or front line phone support..  They don't seem to have email support and the "advanced support" comes with a price tag so I take what I can get at this point and whenever possible try to solve my own problems.

I'm just another customer here, but if there's any way I can help out, let me know.

Hello, I just called Support and I'm not quite sure they understood my request for reverse DNS authority...he seemed to think I wanted to map my hostnames to IP addresses...which I can already do just fine.  I am interested in reverse DNS authority on the /29 I have.  Any assistance would be appreciated.

I have a /29, and my experience with the phone support was that they could not do any sort of delegation... It was about half an hour of me mostly waiting for the phone rep to get answers from whomever they get their help from when they don't know right away.  When I spoke of RFC2317, the rep asked me where I found that.. The IETF, of course... She had no idea what I was talking about so I gave up on trying to do it over the phone.

I had heard rumors that delegation was possible but had not actually seen it in action so, I posted here and messaged the mods who confirmed that the delegation could be done.  It did take several days before it went active, although I assume that part of that delay was because of the holiday, but I kept doing reverse lookups until I saw the delegation was active.  I wasn't immediately told what in-addr.arpa zone to set up on my own servers but once I saw the CNAME records coming in, it was pretty obvious what zone to set up.  Once I set up the zone on my servers, things started working almost immediately.

The point is, it *is* possible but the front line phone support techs don't seem to understand what RDNS delegation is or don't have the tools available to them to set it up and are only able to create static PTR records.   The fortunate thing is that once it's set up, you never have to worry about contacting support to change your reverse lookups again.

Yes, thanks for your reply. My experience matches yours - phone support is basically useless.

So, I guess I need to message mods. This is a bit odd, to say the least... As a customer, I can only get Comcast to do the right thing by talking to moderators on a public forum? Whatever works, I guess.

Wow, that was quick. Replied to mods yesterday, and reverse dns delegation was activated the same day.

Thank you!
