IP Lookup gives wrong location for our static IP Block

I wasn't sure what the best way to handle this is.  This has been going on from day one, for a few years now.  Not the end of the world but it can be a PIA sometimes.   If I go to getip.com and submit one of the static IP's here the office it will report the proper City and Zip (Marina, CA  93933) but most websites will assume I am in San Franciso, CA 94102.  Also, if on WiFi, tablets will also assume the same.  Some apps are correct some are thinking San francisco.  iplocation.net lists me in multiple locales...

Thanks,

Rob

rdtshaw,

I'm not sure why you need to handle this. Geolocation by IP address is notoriously unreliable.  As you have seen, the results on www.iplocation.net show multiple locations for essentially any IP address and the text below the results explains how this can happen.

Think of it this way. An IP address is used to route data packets automatically to an end system based on connections over wire, fiber, or radio links. The relationship of a geographic location of the end system to the network location is not fixed by any technology. This relationship must be determined by other means, such as triangulation using other know locations like cell towers or router sites.  Most often used is data recorded by humans resulting in whois data which is, at best, an approximation, and at worst, entirely misleading where the network whois information implies a different region or country.

From a business/legal view, use of a particular IP address does not establish identity of an end user. Assuming otherwise can be an egregious error. As you have lived with this for "a few years" the question remains, why do you need handle this?

I'm sorry, but data input incorrectly by humans can be corrected.  This is nothing like being triangulated by cell tower at all.  It is a definitive piece of information at a fixed location and it was input into a database at some point. This is not an "approximation", it is the result of the IP block being used elsewhere before I got it and not being properly reported and updated.  Smaller */29 static subnets tend to be reused quickly in the same general areas, while larger */28 subnets like mine are in shorter supply and tend to get moved around when they are recycled to a new account.  (Geographically speaking.)

I am very tired of being offer shipping, weather, tax, ads, etc for a city/county I am not in.  I do not have this happen at my clients offices, they seem to have the correct info.   Some of the entries in iplocation.net show a correct locale, there is no reason they all can't.  When I had an IP Flex setup with AT&T, (Shudder)  I was always assumed to be in Monterey county.  Often off a bit, but by one zip code, not 150 miles away.

"From a business/legal view, use of a particular IP address does not establish identity of an end user."  What?  Tell that to any Internet account holder facing DCMA litigation or the like; it is *THE* damning piece of evidence.  That statement is completely untrue.   That said this has nothing to do with what I'm having an issue with.  I don't want it to know it's "me", just the area I'm coming from.  It is supposed to return a location reasonably close, otherwise why even bother putting that system up?

I have dealt with it for a couple years because it is not a major emergency and I have more important things to deal with day to day.  It is annoying and I'm tired of it.  Please don't reply with "your issue isn't an issue."

Ok, got a useful answer on another forum.  The short answer is while Comcast is the registered owner of the IP block and has the correct info with ARIN; the look ups are provided by other IP location services and they just have not updated to the current information.  I started here on the comcast forums since they are the registered owner of the IP block I'm in.  I checked with the major gelocation providers and found my problem children that have my IP Block in Plesanton and Berkeley, CA.   While both are fine municipalities, I'm in the Monterey/Marina area... 🙂    I have submitted the corrections to the 2 sites in question.  We'll see if that gets it corrected.  Here is a list of the providers I checked.  I found more but alot were downstream from these guys.  If you know of anymore I should check, let me know.  Thanks!!

www.ip-db.com - incorrect - web report form
www.maxmind.com - correct
www.ip2location.com - correct
www.ipligence.com - incorrect - emailed
www.ipaddresslabs.com - correct
