Why is residential Comcast cable so much faster and cheaper?

Howdy,

Location: Firestone, CO

I recently posted on my HoA's Facebook page (yea they have one...lol), to incquire what my neigbors are getting for internet speeds and their pricing, etc.  Turns out, I've discovered an absurdly HUGE difference between residential speeds and pricing vs business offerings. It used to be somewhat comparable, but now residential is 10 to 20x faster, and their pricing has remained the same if not gotten cheaper. Business has not seen this change, in fact its gotten more expensive for comparibly less speed (then residential). Its the complete opposite trend. For example, 25/10 Mbps biz ~$80 a month, whereas 400 Mbps Residential (16x faster, wow!) is available for a similiar price point. Historically, I dont recall this much of a difference.

Why is that?

(I'm using anecdotal evidence as a 12 year business class customer...)

Cheers,

Ted

Hi TedofTeds! There are certain things that are available for business services that are not available with residential, like static IPs, lack of data cap, add-ons like Connection Pro and Wifi Pro and several others. This link has an overview of business services for internet: https://business.comcast.com/learn/internet/business-internet and this one has them for residential, so you can compare: https://www.xfinity.com/learn/internet-service .

So a static IP and supposedly better wifi is worth 300 Mbps?  Yall need to show your work on that equation...

If the add-ons you note were part of the business service (at no additional cost), if no data caps were unique to business, if static ips were needed universally then you might be able to justify the significant difference in speed/price between business and residential. Comcast really should really talk to business customers.

So my speed here at home is 100mps Residential cost 30 bucks a month. Two minutes away I own my business 76mps $160 a month I don’t even need static IP’s are you kidding me? I have not seen any perks other than a Wi-Fi router that is not any better than My gaming one for the arcade.

I found this thread wondering the same thing. Are there regulations that limit how much Comcast can charge residential customers? I pay double for my business service for 1/4 the speed. I can upgrade my home service to be about 10 times faster for about $20 more a month. No contract required. My business options all require a 3 year term and are still way more money for less speed. It's ridiculous. I am a small one-person business but because I am in a store-front I cannot get residential service. If the so-called "business class" service is truly better, then give people the option of the level of service they desire and charge accordingly. I don't see any difference at all and I think it is just a BS excuse to gouge business customers.
