VoIP Jitter & Packet Loss

For the last two days we have been experiencing some random periods of serious jitter and minor packet loss with our VoIP trunking (not Comcast) on our business cable service. Bandwidth has actually remained pretty good and signals all look good in gateway. Mostly happening in the morning.

We are in CA and I noticed there are a couple of other people in CA having some issues now in the forum. Just wondering if there is something going on network wide or maybe just local to me.

I'm in a business complex with a charter school that has several Comcast connections and I'm wondering if they are somehow saturating the incoming line from Comcast. Although if that were the case it seems like it might be more than just jitter & packet loss but actual bandwidth problems too.

We have the 100/20 package. Several instances today of jitter going beyond 200ms which absolutely kills VoIP. Packet loss isn't terrible, but has been as high as 1%. Been using the same config now for over a year and have an occasional problem but nothing like the last two days.

Also in CA and seeing my bandwidth get cut in half, but this occurs in the evenings for me. Thankfully I haven't noticed any packet loss nor any serious jitter. Are you more northern CA by chance?

Fresno, usually considered part of Northern CA, I prefer to say central CA as we are almost dead center of the state. So far today things look clean. Got real bad between 9am-10am yesterday so I'm keeping an eye on it. Have VoIP tester from my ITSP running that constantly measures delay, jitter & packet loss.

Also getting very frustrated with number of router hops. Used to be about 14 hops to my ITSP. When I ran tracert yesterday it was 16. Just ran this morning it's now 18. Maybe there was a problem and they are rerouting traffic, I don't know. Just seems router hops are unnecessary long.

I'm a bit more north in the Sacramento region, so it's unlikely our problems are related. In your case it may be worth having a tech come out just to see if he can see any issues. Though, if you are seeing a packet loss problem you could also request a ticket be sent to tier II. Only downside there is if they don't see an issue when they check they'll close the ticket without any response to you.

Problem has cleared up a little but still having periods of high jitter. Any input from Comcast moderators? Just the thought of having to try to explain the meaning of jitter to someone on support line gives me a headache. What are some thoughts on a higher channel router? I currently have an SMC that I think is a 4X3. Would a newer router, maybe the Netgear with 8X4 I think help with jitter issues? Although I've heard of, and had nightmares with Netgear and VoIP, even in supposed passthrough mode.

I wouldn't expect it to make a difference, especially since the jitter likely isn't within your own network. Though, if your connection is heavily used I could see an 8x4 modem helping out in other ways, it could also add some redundancy to the connection is a few of the channels were to get out of spec.
